architectural competition
**short listed among 125 entries** Eleutheria Square, Thessaloniki, Greece 2013 *in collaboration with: M. Pitsiladi, G. Bountouraki, N. Andritsopoulou, G. Kehaidis |
The concept is based on the rediscovery of the time imprint on space, a space related to significant changes. The sea wall, that once stood between the settlement and the sea, as well as the square’s size and form before the fire of 1917 are traces that inspired the idea.
Main element of the project is the transformation of historical events into space by creating memory_scapes.
The main objective is to restore the relationship between the sea and city and to eliminate the borders of the free space that today constitutes an urban void. The proposition can be divided into three sectors named after the areas that they represent: recollection – articulation - ascension.
Ascension: an inclination is formed from north to south reaching its highest level at the trace of the wall where an elongated bench offers a wide view of the horizon.
Articulation: the existing vegetation is organized in zones based on the fabric of lines which scans the entire surface every 0.6m, forming a filter for the circulation through the square. Canopies are arranged by the repetition of a unit. On the east part, they form a front, a reminiscence of the old blocks.
Recollection: the waterfront is broadened towards the sea and the jetty of the 19th century is expanded, highlighting the old gate from the sea.
